Re: [hypothyroidism] Chuck - Low carb

hi chuck, we've had most of these items in our stores for several years now. i
don't buy them for myself, but i do bring some items to my folks when i see
them; they both do Akins'.
I have tried the sugar free stuff and boy does it do a number on my stomach. I
get sicker than a dog.
The other day I bought some low carb chocolate candy, against better judgment.
OMG, after a few pieces, I got sicker than a dog!!!! I was doubled up in pain.
My mom and dad eat the same stuff with no problem, but it just rips my stomach
apart.
My allergist told me sugar substitutes are not healthy, and strongly advised me
to avoid them, which I have done. I do use Stevia, however. Most of the reports
I read about Stevia were good, but I did read one that gave it a VERY bad rap. I
don't know if I should use it or not, but I am.
I love fruit, but I think I may have an allergy to fructose. My allergist didn't
test me for it, but I'm finding my stomach is hurting me and I cramp up a lot
after I eat fruit, especially apples, which I LOVE!!!
I hate fruit juice.
I just have to have my veggies....lots and lots of them. Give me eggplant,
spinich, garlic, onions, and tomatoes every day, and I'm happy!!!
I can live without chocolate but not my veggies!!! Hugs, Sheila

In the last few months, most grocers have started carrying sugar free
milk and ice cream. Even Braum's has it. They even have low carb
cookies, candies, and cereals, or things that resemble "flakes" and
granola. The taste of some of these reminds you that you are missing
something, but they do provide a healthier alternative to meat and cheese.

If you are eating the low-carb candy, then you have to watch some of the sugar
alcohols (they are not really artificial sweeteners). These are the ones with
names such as: sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, erythritol, etc. They are
polyols. With maltitol, you have to watch out because if you eat more than 50
mg of it, it causes gastric upset. The reason these are low glycemic is because
the body doesn't absorb them...which means it can cause gastric stuff if you
have more than a certain amount. My MD, by the way, feels that xylitol helps
    strengthen the immune system.
